Easter traditions a bit of history

Easter is the most important holiday in the Christian tradition, symbolizing rebirth and a new beginning. It is associated with numerous customs passed down from generation to generation. Painting Easter eggs, blessing the basket, festive breakfast, and joyful Wet Monday are just some of them. At Happy Valley Resort in Szklarska Poręba, we have ensured that guests can feel this unique atmosphere and experience unforgettable Easter celebrations with their loved ones.

Here are some interesting facts about Easter and its traditions:

  1. Where does the tradition of painting eggs come from?

The custom of decorating eggs dates back to antiquity and was present in many cultures as a symbol of new life and rebirth. In Poland, the first decorated Easter eggs appeared as early as the 10th century, and each color had its meaning:

  • Red - love and strength

  • Yellow – joy and sun

  • Green - hope and spring

  1. Blessing of food – a Polish tradition known for centuries

Holy Saturday is the day when baskets of food are blessed in churches. Each basket should contain, among other things, an egg, bread, salt, and a lamb figure.

  1. Wet Monday - Śmingus Dyngus - where does this fun come from?

On Easter Monday, it is traditional to splash water on each other - it was once believed that the more someone got wet, the more luck and success they would have. In some regions of Poland, this was also a time of courtship, when young men would splash young women with water to show their affection! At the resort in Szklarska Poręba, we have also prepared water attractions at the pool.

  1. Easter breakfast – what should it include?

Easter traditions vary from country to country:

  • Italians organize an Easter dinner instead of breakfast, and a popular dish is “Colomba” - a cake shaped like a dove.
  • The French prepare chocolate eggs and enjoy “gigot d'agneau" - roasted lamb.
  • The British on Easter Sunday search for chocolate eggs hidden in gardens - this game is called “Easter Egg Hunt”.

Easter is a unique time full of beautiful traditions - not only the well-known ones but also the less obvious customs.
